ANDOVER
Hello Andover friends. We lost our power last Friday during the heavy windstorm. BETHEL
The Foothills Grille & Catering Co. opened in late December at 186 Main Street, just below the railroad tracks in the village. The restaurant is owned and operated by Bethel residents John Hicinbothem and Tori Hicinbothem and serves American style everyday cooking with a local flare. BRYANT POND

Guess what, it’s Sunday, Jan. 31, and it’s not snowing. I can’t believe it! EAST BETHEL
Boy, this week sure went by fast, yet Friday night was a long night for the neighborhood and it sure got pretty cold, huh? It was a long time with no power on such a cold, windy, and also a full moon, night. Brrr, time to think spring. GILEAD
It was nice to have the wind go away after all the problems it caused this past Friday and Saturday. We woke up at 5:30 a.m. on Friday to no power and it was off for about two hours. Later in the morning the power was out for another couple of hours and then again for several hours in the evening. Saturday morning started out the same way. After a few hours, the power came on and the wind died down so that was the end of it for this time anyway. All the outages were on the North Road and were due to broken branches. The power for the town of Gilead comes up the North Road. GREENWOOD CITY
The squirrel multiplied! There are three out there now. Expect they are in the rabbit family. I will have to dig out the shed to get the trap! Just might have to relocate them up on Crazy Knoll. HANOVER
The area did not escape problems from the ice/rain/windstorm that came on Jan. 24 and 25. Roads were very slick until the temperatures got above freezing. One motor vehicle crash occurred on Main Street in Hanover. Police, Med-Care Ambulance and Rumford Fire Department responded and one injured person was transported to a hospital. MASON
We had more excitement in Mason last weekend than we really wanted. It began Friday afternoon, when our electric power went off at about 4:30 p.m. While this was not unexpected, what with our awful wind and cold temperatures, the fact that the power did not soon come back on was. I started our small generator in order to run the furnace, refrigerator, water pump and provide an outlet for a light and to plug in an electric hotplate. Shortly, we received a phone call from Ina, telling us that the Applin’s reported to her that a tree was across the Kings Highway a short distance down from Dan Grover’s driveway. UPTON
Today, Feb. 1, is windy, wild and cold. Waiting to see if the groundhog sees his shadow tomorrow. WATERFORD
Well we’ve made it past mid-winter — the first cross-quarter day — so we should be spiraling toward spring. Of course you can’t tell it by this week’s cold weather, but that is all the more reason for optimism. The days have been sunny mid-day even if the mornings and nights have been cold. This too shall pass and before we know it spring will be with us. WEST BETHEL
We went to the movies on Thursday evening and had a big surprise when we came out. While we watched the flick, Mother Nature sent a serious snow squall with lots of wind to these parts. We heard tell of cars off the road, etc., and there was certainly a lot of snow to wade through in the parking lot. We proceeded home on Route 2 very cautiously, because the going was slippery, and we did not want to be another statistic. WEST PARIS
The sun is shining and the sky is blue and the temperature is 52. My son-in-law, Bill, is trimming his shrubs and rosebushes and fertilizing them too. Daughter Wendy is putting in her three hours greeting visitors at the small, local Historic Museum downtown. And I am here in a big, sunny window with beautiful hills all around. The two cats, small, black Pascal and big, fluffy white and black Chester, are keeping me company, dozing in the sunny spots on the rug.
Fire in the hole, to brighten WinterFest memories
Several hot air balloons provided a “photo op” Saturday evening on the grounds next to the Norway Savings Bank in Bethel. Balloonists lit the flames that inflate their craft in order for spectators to take pictures. Sunday morning, people turned out at the Bethel Airport to take early morning balloon flights. The balloons were one of the many Bethel WinterFest events that took place in the area last week.
