Gilead

Our front yard is covered with white and pink phlox. The hummingbirds and Monarch butterflies are all over the plants. It is fun to watch them as they go from flower to flower.

My brother, Steve McLain, decided that it was time to mow the grass around the Town of Gilead sign that is by his house. The sign used to be near the end of the Bog Road and was removed when the construction was going on there. When Fred Corriveau put the sign back out, he moved it there since it would be quite visible coming into town.

Fred told Hugh last weekend that the road crew would be putting up and moving signs along the completed sections of Route 2 soon. He said that the other Town of Gilead sign, which has been near the old Wild River Bridge, will be moved to the West end of the new bridge.

The construction on Route 2 is still going on. The crew on the bridge is down to the last section. Soon the old Wild River Bridge will be gone.

Hugh and I went to Bethel Historical Society’s Heritage Festival last weekend. We wanted to get the new book, "The Spirit of Songo" that was written by Norma Salway. We picked up a copy for Hugh’s sister, Mary Lou Berry, and delivered it to her later in the afternoon. It was nice to set and visit with her for awhile.

We ran into a few people to visit with while we were at the Bethel Historical Society. Perry and Happy Chapman, who are also members of the Gilead Historical Society, were set up under the tent and selling raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt. It is a fundraiser for the City Brook Trail in South Waterford.

The GHS is planning on attending the Upton Sesquicentennial Celebration this coming Saturday, Aug. 21. Deborah Judkins contacted us to see if we would set up a table and join them for their day. We would like to support their efforts for their newly formed Upton Historical Society.
