Henrietta and Jim List have returned home from San Jose, Calif., where they attended their son John’s graduation from Santa Clara University Law School.

The Rumford Grange will host an open house at the Rumford Center Grange Hall on Saturday, July 17. The event will start at noon with a luncheon followed by presentation of the Grange Community Service Award. A local citizen who has dedicated hours of effort to help the community will receive the honor. 

Sunday, July 25, the Rumford Grange will have their next public dinner. The menu will consist of beef, potato, vegetables and dessert. For a donation of $8 for each adult and $4 for children it will be a great meal and someone else does the dishes. 

Celebrate Summer with Gardner Roberts Memorial Library is title of the summer reading program for adults. Read a book and return a book to be included in the drawing each Saturday during July and August. 

On Saturday, July 17, more than 1,000 volunteers will assist Maine Audubon with the annual Loon Count. The count will occur from 7 to 7:30 a.m. that day and done from shore and by canoe or motorboat. The Second Annual Loon Photo Contest is open in July and August to anyone in Maine with a camera. Judging will be in September and prizes will be awarded. For more details and guidelines for loon photos visit the Maine Audubon Web site, www.maineaudubon.org or email sgallo@maineaudubon.org.

The Hanover Planning Board met Wednesday, July 7. The Board answered a citizens' questions and CEO John Gauthier described some of his responses to potential projects in Hanover including a possible condo and a Howard Pond subdivision. 

The recent spell of warm weather…..  Start again. The recent spell of darn hot weather made many folks uncomfortable. Grandmother used to say, “It's not the heat, it’s the humidity.”  It brought folks out in hordes to neighborhood pools, area ponds, streams and rivers. And it all felt real good. 

You may recall back last winter when we told you of Bob Brown’s hospitalization and sadly losing his dog, Sam, at the same time. Most folks know by now that Bob is back on his feet and last Saturday he got a new Lab puppy to join him at Plumbago Mountain Farm. The puppy’s name, as you might guess, is Sam. 

Paul Kelly is away sailing on the high seas. 

Sara, Makala and Shawnee Worcester have traveled to Pennsylvania to help Sara’s great- grandmother, Francis Carson, celebrate her 100th birthday. About 50 local area residents and relatives traveled by caravan overnight to complete the trip.

Claudia Nardone has arrived for her summer visit to the area. She is staying at 3J at Howard Pond.
