Vote for Environment

To the Editor:

I am supporting the candidacies of Chad McGrew of Bethel and John Patrick of Rumford.

The Maine League of Conservation Voters (leagueofconservationvoters.ME.com) rates the votes of each legislator on environmental legislation: H. Sawin Millett at 40 percent and Jarrod Crockett at 30 percent.

John Patrick termed out in his House seat and is seeking Senate District 14 seat, as is his opponent Millett. Patrick was rated 80 percent on environmental issues in the 2007-2008 session. Chad McGrew is running against first term Crockett (HD 91), both of Bethel.

Specifically, Crockett voted against a bill for weatherization of Maine residence and business (LD 1485). This bill increases both employment and energy efficiency.

Crockett and Millet opposed a bill to recycle compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) and lower mercury standards in the CFLs. Both voted to abolish the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC), which manages land use in a systematic manner for unorganized territories, including much of Maine's North Woods.

In addition Crockett voted against the budget, which was a compromise of both Republicans and Democrats. Both sides needed to compromise in order to pass a balanced budget, and with Libby Mitchell's leadership, it was accomplished.Republicans tend to vote against efforts to preserve our environment. There are times when rules save us from harmful actions, like degradation of the environment or global warming.
