The preparation for the 2011 Bethel WinterFest, presented by Norway Savings Bank, is well underway and we are excited about the schedule of events that provides for winter fun for everyone! The event runs from Saturday, Jan. 22, to Sunday, Jan. 30. A full list of events can be found by going to www.bethelwinterfest.com
Highlights of the coming festival include: Greenstock Snowmobile Club free snow-groomer rides, organized group ride, and hopefully an antique snowmobile exhibit; Scenic helicopter rides from the Bethel Airport on both weekends, weather permitting; Maine Street Rail Jam on Thursday night, Jan. 27; Snowshoe demonstration on Saturday, Jan. 23; alpine and Nordic skiing events at several venues; inside events at the Bethel Historical Society and throughout the area; and a celebration of Mt. Abram Resort’s 50th Anniversary on the final weekend.
Owens Corning will have an exhibit on Festival Plaza for the entire duration of the festival. They will be showcasing their replacement windows and their insulated panel systems – all in a self-contained trailer. They invite everyone to come and check it out, and enter their drawings for: a house full of replacement windows and a finished basement or garage system installed and fully furnished. Businesses and non-profits throughout the area are invited to add new events to our schedule. Please contact the chamber office.
The ice skating and the Ice Mountain are the centerpiece of the event, and can be enjoyed throughout the winter. Specific events on the ice mountain are pending and will be announced when they are confirmed.
The Winterfest committee of volunteers is to be commended for their tireless efforts to put the pieces in place for all to enjoy. Please be assured that the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce is totally committed to safety. We would like to publicly thank the following volunteers and committee members who have helped to date: Jim Sysko, Jim and Robin Bennett, Joan and Bob Westfall, Ed Bennett, Ivory Currier, Doug Zinchuk, Phil Ottone, Matt Morin, Eric Paul, Nate Clukey, Jonathan Goldberg, Steve Etheridge, Ellie Andrews and Kevin Rosenberg. A giant thanks to Bancroft Contracting, Coleman Concrete, FW Webb, Western Maine Steel, Marden’s Surplus and Salvage, East Coast Rent-a-Fence, Pat’s Pizza, Rooster’s Roadhouse, Bethel’s Best Pizza Grille and Dairy Bar and the Good Food Store, all who have donated products and services to date. Sponsors who have provided financial support for the event are Norway Savings Bank, Allen’s Coffee Brandy, Owens Corning, Bennett Automotive, Brooks Bros, Inc., Pat’s Pizza, Sudbury Inn, Smokin’ Good BBQ – we would not be able to do this event without them – thanks!
The Maine Street Rail Jam is seeking volunteers to help with road guarding for the entire time period – from set-up, ongoing through the event, and clean-up. Please contact Nate Clukey if you are willing to help. A separate letter outlining specifics about that event will appear in next week’s edition of the Bethel Citizen.
The Bethel Winterfest represents a sampling of all the wonderful facets of winter here in the Bethel region. We invite you to come out and enjoy what our committee, sponsors, donors and winter venues have prepared for you.
