Newry July 1

Hi again Readers and Friends. This week’s column may be a bit dry and brief as I have come to discover that my fellow Newry citizens are somewhat shy. Either that or they may feel that their news isn’t that entertaining and that is where they’d be wrong.

I thank those of you who have contacted me and offered up bits and pieces of your lives to share. It makes my task a little easier. I didn’t realize that I would assume the role of reporter when I volunteered to take over this column. I think that some people get tight lipped when they see me coming, which I now find rather humorous. SO, if you get sick of hearing about my goats and my gardens, be warned. As you only have yourselves to blame.

School vacation has settled in upon us and I’ve got to admit that the first week was a bit rocky. But the kids and I have settled into our blessed summer routine fairly well. Lots of time is spent exploring the great outdoors by way of nature walks, wading in the brooks and streams near the house, fishing and swimming. But let’s not forget the importance of roasting marshmallows and the consumption of tons of juicy, drippy watermelon. I really miss “seeded” watermelons. Their flavor was always so much sweeter than these new hybrid “seedless” watermelons. Most every store carries just these new bizarre oddities, scientists trying to step it up for convenience sake. A lazy, self-driven world has robbed our children the joy of spitting seeds at each other in all- out summertime war. Oh well, I never have been one to accept change easily. C’est la vie!

In other news, be sure to head to Bethel for the annual Art Fair on the Common and the Porch Players acting around Historic Bethel, taking place on Saturday, July 3rd. The Newry Town Office will be closed on Monday, July 5, in observance of Independence Day. Wishing you all a safe and memorable Fourth of July, be sure to pause for a moment to reflect on your freedom and the cost it was bought for. Show your colors this weekend and thank a veteran for your freedom!

As always, (I don’t bite) please contact me with your news - “all the news, that is news that’s fit to print”. (207) 824-0836 or sabcart@gmail.com.
