Hanover

Hanover celebrated the annual tree lighting last Saturday evening at the Town Office with a small but ambitious group of citizens and friends. Following an introduction by Select Board Chairman Brenda Lee Gross the tree lights were illuminated. Folks walked or drove to the Hanover Town House for snacks, hot chocolate and socializing.

Rumford Fire Department responded to a residence on Mill Hill Road for a carbon monoxide detector that was sounding a tone. After investigating it was determined there was no hazard present and the truck traveled back to the fire station.

In the late 1800s during the time of prohibition, an organization formed called The Good Templars to support complete abstinence from the use of alcohol by either sex. There was a chapter in Hanover that met in the Union Aid Society Building (Just a Hobby Antiques). The charter for that organization was stored at the hall for many years and was taken away for safe keeping when the building changed ownership. During the years since then Chris Howe has diligently worked to restore it to original condition. Last week he finished the restoration and donated it as a historic artifact to the Town of Hanover. It now hangs in the Town Office and everyone is urged to stop by to view it.

Holiday hours at the Hanover Town Office include being closed on Dec. 24 and 25. The office will also be closed on Jan. 1, 2013. If you wish to take advantage of the 2 percent tax break for your taxes you will need to pay before Dec. 31.

Keep in mind that our dog friends need their licenses before the end of the year. Hunting and fishing licenses need to be purchased before Dec. 31 if you plan to hunt or fish in January.

Donna and Clem Worcester from Hanover and Freeman Farrington from East Andover traveled to Brunswick last Sunday to attend a Knights of Pythias Christmas party.

Donna and Clem visited their daughter Jenny and her husband Matt Tirrell in Oxford Sunday.
