Ira Augustus Gammon Jr., 71, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at his home on the Norton Road, Dixfield, with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Peru on May 23, 1941, the son of Ira and Mary (Lufkin) Gammon Sr. and had attended schools in Andover and Peru. At a very young age he left school and went to work in logging, using a horse-drawn team for hauling. He built a successful business working several years for International Paper and Seven Islands.
He had a great interest in registered cattle and training oxen for the fairs, where he was a familiar figure and won many ribbons and trophies. He enjoyed wheeling and dealing and usually got the best deal. He also enjoyed gardening and reading and had a great sense of humor.
Ira was a man of many talents, whether building construction or keeping the skidders in good running condition for logging. He was married in Steep Falls on June 5, 1999, to Joyce Stiles Gammon, who survives of Dixfield.
Other survivors include daughter, Lori Kersey and husband Leo III of Dixfield; grandchildren, Brooke, Erik and Leo Kersey IV of Dixfield and Rosie Arsenault of Canton; stepchildren, Nick Rossi and wife Patricia of Casco, Peter Rossi and companion Debbie Farrah of Bridgton and Lori Marier and husband Marc and their daughter Juliette of Hong Kong; brothers, Clifford of Peru and Frank Gammon of Andover; sisters, Mary Bailey and husband, Clarence and Marilyn White of Andover; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Kevin Gammon of Andover; and stepson, Pat Rossi of Raymond.
