Newry selectmen set date for hearing on discontinuing road

Newry selectmen Monday set July 12 at 5:30 p.m. as the date for a public hearing on possibly discontinuing the .35-mile Wheeler Road, located in the Bear River Valley off Route 26. Discontinuance would require a town meeting vote.
Seven lots on the road would be affected, code enforcement officer Dave Bonney said.
If discontinued, the land over which the road runs would be divided down the center line among abutting property owners, who would be responsible for the road's maintenance, town officials said.
Selectmen also discussed possible people to appoint to the Planning Board to fill a seat left vacant by the recent death of Mark Wight. Town Administrator Loretta Powers will continue to research possibilities.
