Gilead

I am writing this on Sunday afternoon and the weather is just beautiful.Sun is shining and there is no hint (other than the red sky this morning) of what is coming up the coast and will be here in another day or so.

My brother, Steve McLain, attended a seminar on motor vehicle electrical systems that was held at the Grand Summit this past week. It was sponsored by NAPA. This was related to his job as MSAD 44 at the Transportation Garage.

Our granddaughter, Sidney Chapman, plays hockey with the team in Berlin, N.H. Tim posted a picture on Facebook of her playing hockey at the Verizon in Manchester, N.H., this past Sunday.

Lise McLain saw a flash of red at the bird feeder, and upon closer inspection she found out that it was a Cardinal.

Lise McLain is a fan of thoroughbred horse racing for over six years now, and went to Suffolk Downs, which is a thoroughbred horse racetrack, on October 13 in Boston, Mass. When it was discovered that she was from Maine by some of the staff, the President-Business Manager, Mr. Ciarlone, gave her the grand tour of the racetrack, and she was given special permission to dine at their members’ only restaurant. The activities slow down in the Autumn at the racetrack so, therefore, the staff is available to give some customers some individual attention. Suffolk Downs will close for the season on Oct. 29, and it has paid the non-refundable fee of $400,000 recently in order to enter the competition to hopefully obtain a license so that it can become a world class thoroughbred and casino resort facility. No word yet as to who will actually obtain the special license from the State of Massachusetts.

Marina McLain, the granddaughter of Steve and Lise McLain, has recently received an acceptance letter to attend the Graphics Design program next fall at Liberty University, which is located in Virginia. Her father, Major Stephen Joseph McLain, III from the country of Norway, received his Master's in Business Administration (MBA) from Liberty University.

Stephen e-mailed a picture of Marina and her brothers, Nathan, Quinn and Evan. The children participated in Halloween activities on the NATO base on Friday night. They had a good time. Quinn and Evan did trick or treating with help from Nathan and Marina. Then, everyone went over to the haunted house and game area. They also had hot chocolate and hot dogs.

Mary Tyler called last Sunday to let me know that her sister-in-law, Carol Cole, passed away last week. Carol was the wife of Mary’s brother, Merle Cole.

Town Office

The November Election will be held at the Town Hall on Nov. 6. Polls open at 10 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. The Town Clerk will be available in the office on Tuesday night for anyone who would like to vote by absentee ballot.

Gilead Historical Society

Happy Belated Birthday wishes go out to Judy Bishop of Yarmouth. Judy and her husband, Bob, are dedicated members of the GHS.

The GHS has lost another member, Earl Higgins, of Shillington, Pa. Earl was a Charter Member and also a Life Member. He was a descendent of Ephraim Wight, who was one of the early settlers of Gilead. He attended the Gilead Bicentennial Celebration in 2004.
