Gilead
I suppose since this is the first weekend in December, we should expect this cold and snow. The roads have been slippery and causing a few area accidents. The weatherman predicted that the weather will get warmer over the next few days, so I am hoping he is right!
My brother, Steve McLain, stopped at the house Saturday and said that he was going to go down the North Road to see if Brad was at home.
Steve and Lise McLain attended the Rotary Club breakfast last Sunday. They were joined by Brad McLain and his wife, Carole Mason, Ryan Seames and his daughter, Olivia.
Danny Cole is recovering from his recent surgery. Get well wishes go out to Dan.
The Gilead Fire Department was called out for a chimney fire last Friday on the North Road. Bethel Fire and Shelburne Fire responded for mutual aid. Newry Fire was also toned out but returned to base when it was determined that the fire was under control. Many thanks to the mutual aid departments.
Area Wildlife
Not too much to report on new birds. Last Sunday, there was a Hairy Woodpecker at the bird feeder. The birds seem to like the “bird patty” that I made and put out. Mary Tyler called last Saturday and said that she had seen a Brown-headed Cowbird out on the ground with the other birds that she had been feeding. The crows have also returned to look for food. There was some kind of a hawk out behind the house last Sunday, also. We just caught a glimpse of it before it headed in the direction of the Androscoggin River.
There was also a report that someone had seen a young bear on the Bog Road.
Gilead Historical Society
The GHS still has some 2013 calendars for sale at the bargain price of $5 each. Mary Tyler sold a few at the craft fairs that she attended.
