With predictions of a foot or more of snow on Tuesday, the Free Community Lunch was canceled. The next community lunch will be on April 19 at noon at the CEB. These events are sponsored by the People in Action Committee, which is a group of local citizens and members of both churches who want to promote good nutrition and provide a place for senior citizens and others to meet and greet. We trust that by this next event the snow will have ended!?
At Town Meeting on Saturday, the big item of a new fire truck was defeated while citizens voted to continue to support our local school and work toward a solution to keep a school in Andover. Town employees salary increases were reduced from 3 percent to 2 percent. I'm sure there are more details of the meeting in other parts of this publication.
Despite the cold and a bitter wind, the Sleigh Ride project to benefit the Hughes family was a huge success on Sunday, St. Patrick's Day. I applaud the brave souls standing around waiting for their turn to ride in the horse-drawn sleigh provided by the Hutchinsons, but I was too chicken to stay.
This Saturday, March 23, there will be a bake and food sale at the CEB to benefit the Andover Food Pantry which services the towns of Andover, Upton, Roxbury and Byron. In addition to baked goods there will be take-out foods for your Saturday lunch or evening meal including, baked beans, American Chop Suey, sweet and sour meatballs, and slaw. Each dollar raised will be matched by a grant to the pantry.
Easter falls on March 31 this year and both churches will have several services to mark this important event in the life of Christian churches everywhere. I will have complete schedules in next week's column.
The traditional Easter Egg Hunt in Andover will be held on Saturday morning, March 30, beginning at 9 a.m. at Mills' Market. Children ages pre-school through 6th grade are eligible to participate. The Mills family has been doing this community project for many years and will be busy hiding eggs prior to the hunt. Donation jars to support this project are in The Little Red Hen Restaurant and Andover General Store.
The “regulars” at the Little Red Hen Restaurant will be sad that our favorite eatery will be closed from April 1 to 15, reopening on April 16; however, we wish Melissa and her family a wonderful and restful vacation in the South.
You might want to mark your calendars for some important events in April. On the 13 an auction will be held at 4 p.m. in the Town Hall and in the evening a music event featuring Pete Coolidge and friends. Both events will be to support and benefit the Hughes family. On April 27, the annual Birthday Supper will be held at the CEB. This event was started in 1938 by the Ladies Aid Society and has continued annually except for a couple of years during WW II when rationing was in effect.
