Although we’re well into mud season, winter sports are not over yet. I found enough snow in the woods on Easter Sunday to do a little snowshoeing. The ice on the bogs had thinned and didn’t support my weight. Many of the fields and banks along the roadways are free of snow. In a few days skunk cabbages will be pushing their way up through the snow and ice. Watch for the first wildflowers of the spring along the roadways: bluets, myrtles, and violets will be blooming within the next two weeks.
The next few weeks, the local ski areas are offering excellent spring skiing events. Saturday, April 6, is customer appreciation day at Mt. Abram Ski Resort. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. lift tickets will be $15. April 5-7 is the Parrothead Festival at Sunday River. Along with the skiing, the festival offers music, food, drink, and other special activities.
Two important events are coming up this week. This Saturday, April 6, there will be a benefit for Judy Buck Lamontagne at the West Bethel Grange Hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Judy had a stroke in December and the funds will help with much-needed expenses. The benefit includes a potluck dinner, door prizes, and a Chinese auction. The cost is $5; $2.50 for children 8 years old and under.
Thursday, April 11, the To Your Health Committee of Western Mountains Senior College will present “Good Mind – Good Mood.” Four panelists will discuss maximizing good health and happiness as we age. The panelists are Lynn Arizzi, “Music Makes the Soul Soar,” Janet Willie, “Staying Positive: Maintaining Connections through Movement;” Cathi DiCocco, “Feed Your Mind and Manage Your Moods,” and Ellen Crocker, “Homework for Old Age: What’s the Assignment Now?” The program is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the West Parish Congregational Church on Church Street in Bethel. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call Rosabelle Tifft at 824-2053. The program is a collaborative effort of To Your Health, Bethel Family Health Center, and MSAD 44 Continuing Education.
