MARTHA GROVER, EMERGING ARTIST-Mason Township native Martha Grover was honored in Philadelphia last month for her work in the ceramic arts. The 2010 "Emerging Artists" program gives early-career artists "who show exceptional promise the opportunity to present their work to an international audience at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Annual Conference," according to the NCECA. Grover was one of six artists chosen from around the world. She showed slides of her current work and talked about her sources of inspiration. A Bennington College grad who holds a masters of fine arts from UMass Dartmouth, Grover wrote of her work, "I seek to enjance the experience of interacting with functional objects ... I think of the fluid visual movement around a piece, as a choreographer would move dancers across a stage ... In our lives, we often move past the objects surrounding us at a very quick pace. My work generates a moment to pause. My goal is to create an undeniable presence, one that acts as an invitation to explore the work thoroughly, taking time to know all of its many facets."Grover, whose work has been displayed in a variety of exhibitions and galleries, is currently an artist in residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Mont.
