Waterford

It is a true Maine spring. One day it is warm and sunny, the next it snows. Her at the end of April we will see more snow than most of the rest of the month. That is OK — poor man’s fertilizer and all.

Last week I saw several Canada geese across the street from Springer’s market. They seemed to be waiting like the rest of us for them to reopen. The sign still says “Open Soon.” Guess we wait some more; anxious for Taco Tuesday.

May Day is Saturday. When I was small that was already not an OK holiday. We had one of those kids’ books with all the holidays and May 1 was a big one where we were supposed to hang May baskets on people’s doorknobs. My mother said we couldn’t do that because of politics — May Day was also a Soviet Holiday and it was not allowed to celebrate it. That was the days of the McCarthy era. There was much fear in the air that celebrating might bring calls/threats that we were com-munists. I didn’t understand then. I still don’t.
