To catch a driver's eye

Bethel Outing Club member Kirk Siegel roller skis Mason Street, wearing one of the high-visibility safety vests now available for a discounted price at True North Adventure Ware. The death last summer of a young athlete nordic sking at dusk in Aroostook County inspired the club and store to partner in an effort to make non-motorized users of local roads more safety conscious and more visible to drivers. In November the club contributed $200 to purchase vests for activities such as biking, roller skiing and running. True North is now making them available for $5 (BOC members) and $10 non-members. In this daytime photograph, the reflectivity of the vest is triggered only by a camera flash; at dawn, dust, or at night, a car's headlights make the vest stand out far more prominently.
