Thomas Smith

Thomas Samuel Smith, 76, died quietly on Monday, May 10, 2010 at Hospice House in Concord, N.H., with his family surrounding him.

He was born in Syracuse, N.Y., the third child of the late Samuel and Kathleen (Dyer) Smith of Newry, Maine.

He was a graduate of Gould Academy, Bethel Maine, Class of 1952, after which he entered trade school prior to enlisting in the armed services. After serving in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, he worked as a heavy duty diesel mechanic specializing in engine and transmission rebuilds, retiring from McLaughlin Mayflower in 1996.

A long-time resident of Concord, Tom served as President of the Bow Pioneers Snowmobile Club, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Baptist Church. He was known to frequent the Sandwich Depot for coffee and a blueberry muffin along with his dog, Rose O’Grady, in his antique red 1947 Chevy Pickup. Tom enjoyed participating in various parades and classic vehicle events, winning many trophies.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Virginia Sarah (Apte) Smith; a son, James Edward Smith of Merrimack; a daughter, Danna Kathleen Foster and husband Tim of Dahlonega, Ga.; stepsons, Adam Jewell and wife Wendi, Vincent Jewell and wife Carrie, and Christopher Jewell and wife Amanda all of the Lebanon/Claremont area; and five grandchildren.

A Graveside Service with military honors will be held at the New Hampshire State Veteran’s Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 14, 2010. A Celebration of Life Remembrance will be held at the United Baptist Church, corner of South and Fayette streets, Concord at noon.

Virginia Smith and family will be at the Pleasant River Campground in Bethel on Saturday, May 15, and Sunday May 16. The family will be happy to receive all who wish to offer condolences and share stories of Tom’s life around the campfire Saturday evening.
