Newry

by Seneca Corriveau

Such a busy week here in Newry. I think perhaps that this glorious weather is to blame. We were trapped under the dreary cloak of winter for so long that this warm, enveloping sun makes us all a bit giddy.

Did anyone happen to notice that the colorful water wheel is back in place at Bonnie Learned’s little stream near the road? Carolyn Bennett has gladly assumed responsibility for it and will take it down and store it when the snow flies once again.

On Thursday, the Special Olympics held a Regional Track Meet at Hosmer Field in Rumford. Newry’s own Darren Buker earned the first-place ribbon in the 25-meter dash, the first-place ribbon in the 25-meter slalom and the fourth-place ribbon in the shot put. Hooray, Darren, we are so proud of you! This meet was held in preparation for the State Meet to be held June 11, 12 and 13 in Orono.

On Saturday, the friends and family of Amber (Brooke) Head gathered at the Bethel Alliance Church to shower her with love and gifts for new baby. Amber received many gifts for the new baby and lucky for Maya, she got some too! The nursery walls won’t echo from emptiness anymore, regardless of the acoustics. I have to just add that I made some pretty fantastic dips for the shower. Sorry to sound my own horn but I am thoroughly enjoying my goats!

I have four dairy goats but only one of them is in milk, another is due to kid in July. Even with just one goat milking, I have enough milk for my family. We aren’t drinking it yet but I make Mozzarella, Ricotta and Chevre` cheese and yogurt. For the shower I made Greek yogurt dip. One of them flavored with garlic and cucumber for the veggies and the other a fruit dip, flavored with honey and cardamom. I get such a thrill creating all these wonderful things from my farm.

I stopped in at the Corner on Monday and caught a juicy tidbit from Pete. Most of you know it as the Bear River Trading Post, but to me its “The Corner,”-sorry Doug! Anyway, Pete informed me that the fireflies and the June bugs are out. Pete seems to me, to be a good one to trust on these matters, as he spends a good deal of his time outdoors.

There is going to be a Wellness Weekend at the Mahoosuc Mountain Lodge in Newry, June 4-6. Some activities include T’ai Chi, Qigong, Yoga and Color Mapping and a potluck on Saturday. For more information or to sign up for any of the presentations or sessions please contact Polly Mahoney at 824-2073.

Be sure to put your dance shoes on because there is a benefit for Rhonda Buker on Saturday, June 5, at the Locke Mills Legion Hall from 4 to 9 p.m. She has been suffering from Chronic Lyme Disease for at least two years now. There will be a pasta dinner, 50/50 raffle and live music, so come join the fun!

Looks to be a wonderful weekend, get outside and soak up the sun. After all, we live in Maine and the weather could change in 10 minutes….
