Keep them responsible to us

To the Editor:

We would like to urge a “no” vote on the very hasty proposal by some of the County Commissioners on the June 8 ballot. This initiative would allow the commissioners to appoint the County Treasurer, rather than allowing the voters to continue to elect a person for this office every four years. If the County Commissioners truly think a change needs to be made, this change should be the result of a careful and thoughtful process involving the citizens, rather than a sudden and one-sided ballot initiative.

A treasurer appointed by the commissioners would be beholden to them for his/her job. A person who is elected is responsible to us — the voters.
