Wilma 'Beth' Awalt
Wilma “Beth” Brown Awalt, 75, formerly of Place St.Marie, 64 Oxford Street, Lewiston, passed away comfortably, Monday, May 31, 2010 at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, with her family by her side.
She was born March 7, 1935 in Locke Mills, Maine, daughter of the late Carl Swan and Eva (Bartlett) Swan. She graduated from Gould Academy in 1953. She first married John Brown on Dec. 26,1953, then Alan Awalt on Oct. 27,1984.
Beth was a homemaker raising her family and was always there for friends or family in need of assistance. In her younger years she was an active member of the Parent-Teachers Club and many social clubs. In her later years she could always be found helping family, friends and neighbors with rides, meals and gifts, known as Grammy Beth to many of the neighborhood children. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross serving snacks and warm drinks to firefighters.
Beth will be remembered for her love of animals, all of the wonderful crafts that she enjoyed making for many years and her collection of hundreds of bells.
Beth is survived by her three sons, Daryl Brown of Old Town, Michael Brown and fiancé Alice Cooper of Turner, Eric Brown and wife Ellen of Leeds; sisters, Musa Brown, Carol Jordan and husband Rodney; brother, Hugh “Cubby” Swan and his wife Denise; special niece, Katy Brown and husband Eugene. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews as well as lifelong daughter-in-law Debbie Storey.
Beth was predeceased by her husband Alan Awalt in 2005; ex-husband John Brown in 2006; two sons, Neal Brown and Kevin Brown; two brothers, Delwin Long and Carl Swan, Jr.; three sisters, Margaret (Long) Ring, Gwendylyn (Swan) Dorey, and Clover (Swan) Emery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 4, at Fortin/Auburn with a memorial service to follow at 6 p.m. In Beth’s memory please make donations to the American Red Cross, 1180 Lisbon Street, Lewiston, ME 04240.
