The Mollyockett Treasure Hunt

Mollyockett was a Pequawket Indian who lived among and befriended the early settlers of Western Maine. Second only to her medical reputation as the great "Indian doctress," was Mollyockett's fame as a storyteller. She was a welcomed guest at many homes, and some of her tales were passed down through the generations.

Most famous are the "treasure stories" - the burying of Indian gold in West Paris beneath a trap hung in trees, and similar tales involving White Cap in Andover and Hemlock Island in East Bethel.

The Mollyockett Treasure Hunt, beginning June 10, will commemorate those tales by offering a $500 cash prize to the person(s) who finds the hidden treasure, in this case a medallion. The object of the hunt is to decipher a series of clues and locate the medallion hidden on public land somewhere within a 30-minute drive of Bethel. The finder of the medallion may claim the cash prize on Mollyockett Days.

Clues, each different and more revealing, will be published once a week for six weeks in The Bethel Citizen or until the medallion is found. This year, Mollyockett Days takes place on July 17 & 18. If the medallion is not found by midnight, Friday, July 16, the hunt will be terminated.

Treasure Hunt Rules

 Anyone is eligible to join the thrilling hunt for $500 except past winners, employees and immediate family members of Sun Media Group, Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce board members and immediate family members of the BACC staff, as well as all contest sponsors and partners. To claim the prize money, you must be 18 years or older.

The finder of the Mollyockett Treasure Hunt medallion must immediately return the medallion to a member of the Bethel Area Chamber staff. The finder will receive the cash prize of $500 at Mollyockett Days, July 17. Clues for the Mollyockett Treasure Hunt will be hidden weekly in The Bethel Citizen beginning Thursday, June 10.

The medallion is made of aluminum and is approximately two inches in diameter. It will be hidden only on public land, somewhere within a 30-minute drive of Bethel. The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce reserves the right to discontinue the hunt at any time if public property is destroyed.

The medallion is generally hidden in or attached to something else. The medallion is not buried below ground - as the rules state, searchers do not need to destroy property to find it, this includes digging up the ground. Searchers also do not need to risk personal injury to find the medallion. All contestants agree that The Bethel Citizen and the Bethel Area Chamber of commerce will have no liability whatsoever and will be held harmless of any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly from acceptance, possession, misuse, or use of the prize or participation in this contest.

The winner grants permission for The Bethel Citizen and the Bethel Area Chamber of commerce to use his or her name, photograph, voice, and/or likeness for advertising and/or publicity.
