Posted June 25-Bethel firefighter Andy Whitney, left, pulled Mildred Jackson, 84, from her car as it sank in Round Pond in Greenwood Thursday. Jackson (on stretcher), said later she believed she dozed off as she was driving on Route 26. Her car went into the water on the southbound side of the road, ending up about 40 feet from shore. Passerby Diane Gaudreau of Woodstock saw her and called 911. Whitney arrived and went into the pond, cutting Jackson's seat belt with a pocket knife and pulling her to safety through the window. Jeremy Morin of Gilead also assisted in the rescue. Here, Jim Bennett of Bethel Rescue (blue shirt) readies Jackson for transportation by ambulance. In the distance, beyond her upraised hands, the roof of Jackson's nearly submerged car been be seen.
