Sunday River zip line opens Saturday
POSTED AUG. 5-Starting on Saturday Sunday River will offer a new way to get down the mountain fast.
The new Zip Line Tours provide six zip lines that traverse the wooded area between the ski trails of Mixing Bowl, Tourist Trap, Outta Here, and Thataway, according to a resort press release.
The lines, made of heavy cable, range between 100 and 300 feet in length.
Riders wear a harness that attaches them to the line, and they also hold on to straps for support.
A tour includes equipment fitting, orientation, and a guided expedition through each of the six stations. Participants must be at least three feet tall and weigh between 60 and 300 pounds.
The top speed riding the line is approximately 25 miles per hour, according to Sunday River spokesman Darcy Liberty. Riders average 40 feet above the ground, with the highest point 80 feet in the air.
The riders launch from either a tree platform or the ground, Liberty said.
“Guides are located at the ends of each line and use a stopping block in advance of each end platform to slow participants down,” she said. “In most scenarios, the slack in the cable will slow people down well in advance.”
The zip lines are similar to those at other Boyne resorts in Michigan and Montana, she said.
For the summer, zip line tours will be open Fridays through Sundays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and are $39 for all ages.
Reservations are not required but are recommended (800 543-2754).
Tours will remain open through Columbus Day weekend, close briefly, and will reopen for the winter shortly after opening day of the ski season.
