POSTED AUG. 5-The Gilead, Bethel and Shelburne (N.H.) fire departments and Bethel Rescue teamed up last week for an annual vehicle extrication training at Bog Brook Training Center in Gilead. The training also serves as a demonstration for members of the Young Marines program, which meets each year at Bog Brook. The emergency personnel set up a scenario in which two vehicles, each carrying several Young Marines, collided. Firefighters broke the windows and cut the doors and tops off to free the “victims.” While doing so, they covered them in blankets to protect them from flying debris. Many of the young people recently got their drivers’ licenses, said GFD Chief Ken Cole, so the enactment of what can happen during a crash reinforced the need for developing safe driving habits.
