Bethel (Nancy)

Jewel L. Clark, the artist and singer-songwriter who lives in Bethel, illustrated the newly released children’s book “Horse Tails by Horses in Harness.” The book was written by Patricia Probert Gott of South Paris. Gott, who has owned, raised, and trained horses since she was eight years old, has written thirteen books about horses. This book tells the story of Clyde, a young colt separated from his mother. Clyde doesn’t know what kind of a horse he is so he interviews thirteen breeds of horses, including mini horses, Morgans, and Percherons, to find out what kind of work he’ll do when he grows up. The book is recommended for children under eleven.

The cover drawing depicts two Haflinger horses, Buddy and Nick, owned by Lance Bean of Woodstock.

The book may be purchased at Books N Things in Norway, Smedberg’s Farm Stand in Oxford, http://www.prgottbooks.net/, or http://www.amazon.com/.

Construction work was completed this week at the Bethel United Methodist Church. A new drainage system was put in and repair work done on the building annex, including replacement of sills and clapboards. The work was done by David Berry and his crew, Haines Family Businesses, and Craig Ryerson.

Last week I wrote about the slight drop in Maine gas prices, always a good thing for us. On Sunday, my mother and I went to Kennebunk to visit former Bethel residents Gene Descoteau and Dennis Hayden at their new home. We found gas prices as low as $3.45 in the Biddeford-Arundel area.

The Bethel Dog Park committee has a new supply of “Friends of Bethel Dog Park” calendars and tee-shirts. The 2013 calendar features pictures of local dogs. Tee-shirts are available in various sizes (up to XXL) and colors, including blue, brown, grey, and pink. If you’d like to get calendars and tee-shirts, you can contact me, or come to the next dog park supporters meeting on Monday, Nov. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Mahoosuc Land Trust Building on Route 2, next door to the Crossroads Diner.
