Upton shorefront owners pay their share
Guess it's time I put my two cents worth in regarding Upton voters rejecting a whole-town appraisal (Vote: 16 Against and 14 For).
The last few years the taxes have been going up, the land values in particular. It was said in another letter to the editor, that the lake owners showed up more than others. Naturally, we did as the selectmen and others want us on the lake to pay for the rest of the town. We are zoned around the lake and have restrictions on size and what we can and cannot do. It's been this way for years. The latest is you have to have 200-feet frontage on the lake. The rest of the town isn't zoned.
Is that equality? All we get for our taxes are roads, school and town landfill. The more our valuation is, the more the county will get. Now, I hear the select persons are to put the issue on the March warrant. Of course, there are several of us that go South in the winter and come back in April. They should get their own way then. If not they will try again.
As of now, the voters have spoken. Will the selectmen honor the will of the people? Wouldn't they be surprised if the March vote had the same result? Do other residents think if the shore owners are taxed more, their taxes won't go up as well? They are in for a big surprise! The property taxes go up, the mil rate goes down, taxes are still higher. I rest my case.
