Turkey Tuesday is Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall on the Gore Road in Locke’s Mills. The event is an annual fundraiser for the local area food bank. Turkey, gravy, stuffing, and mashed potatoes are provided through the Good Food Store in Bethel. Attendees bring 1) a potluck dish to share and 2) a donation of either cash or non-perishable food. The donations go to the food pantry.

The next six months are when there is the highest demand for food and assistance from our local food bank. All types of support, fundraising, and donations are welcome. Donations of gently-used clothing are accepted at the Clothing Exchange, Bethel Park, 23 Mason Street, Bethel, during open hours. For information, call 824-4090. Clothing may be dropped off at the Northeast Bank on Main Street during business hours. Non-perishable food can be left in the donation baskets at the Bethel Foodliner. The Food Pantry is open by appointment only (824-0369). Monetary donations can be sent to Bethel Area District Exchange and Food Pantry, P.O. Box 232, Bethel, ME 04217.

The Leonid meteor showers are coming this weekend. The meteors, or shooting stars, are the debris trail of the comet Tempel-Tuttle and appear to radiate from the constellation Leo. The meteors will appear most brightly from Nov. 16-19 in the hours between midnight and dawn. Astronomers disagree slightly about the peak of the showers. Some say the best viewing will be after midnight on Nov. 16 and before dawn on the 17th. Others say that the peak will be the night of Nov. 17. There is only a crescent moon, so if the skies are clear, the Leonids should put on a good show. For the best show pick a secluded spot away from lights. This time of year remember to take a sleeping bag and a thermos of hot chocolate or coffee.

Last week I wrote about the Maine gas prices. I got a response from my cousin Ken Ring, who lives in Virginia. He e-mailed: “Nancy, come visit in VA. Gas is around $3.10 here.”
