Remembering Earlon 'Bud' Paine
Few citizens of Bethel have achieved the status of Earlon "Bud" Paine as being a central figure who comes to mind when one thinks of this town. As a longtime postmaster, military veteran, Masonic member, and with his numerous other connections, "Bud" in so many ways embodied the consummate good citizen, who served this community so well in so many ways. On almost any occasion in town, one usually saw "Bud" conversing with someone in his usual genial and witty manner. I will certainly miss seeing him at town functions and other gatherings. One could almost count on "Bud" being there through all these many years.
For some time, "Bud" and his beloved wife Mary were "regulars" on our Bethel Historical Society mailing group who do such yeoman volunteer service in helping the organization get its publications to its members and friends. "Bud" was also rarely if ever critical of anyone and loved to make humorous quips about everyday life in this area. Our municipal "fabric" has indeed undergone a significant change with this loss that will be difficult to repair at least in the short term.
