SUPPORT MARIJUANA BILL
While I grew up in Greenwood, I am one of the many people in our region who have had to find economic opportunity outside of my home state. I keep in close contact with my friends and classmates, and pay attention to the political news in the hope that lawmakers will do the right thing and begin to adequately address some of the core challenges facing rural Maine.
The one part of the economy that seems to never falter is underground marijuana cultivation, sale and consumption. For years, it’s been one of the top cash crops in the state. Whether it’s ski season or swimming season, our region is driven by tourism. Imagine what we could do for our economy if we legalized it, taxed it and regulated it. We have an opportunity to get ahead of an economic boom while encouraging a steady stream of tourists. The new tax revenues could also help fund education and weatherization while precious law enforcement resources could be better focused on harmful crime.
I urge local lawmakers to support LD 1229, “An Act to Tax and Regulate Marijuana.” Let’s get ahead of an issue we know is coming, set up a responsible regulatory framework and create real economic opportunity for rural Maine.
