The snow is gone on the front lawn and it is now covered with lots of spring birds. The little chipmunk is competing for seeds and darting between the birds on the ground. The Goldfinches are getting more yellow each day and the Purple Finches are getting redder. There were two female Cardinals at the feeder last weekend, but no sign of the male Cardinal.
My brother, Steve McLain, was at the house Saturday morning. After visiting for a while, we went over to the Town Office and he put up the bulletin board by the tax collector’s desk.
Mary Tyler has increased the number of moose that she has seen this season to five. Besides the two she saw in Gilead, she saw three more on her way to visit relatives in New Hampshire.
Our grandson, Ben Chapman, called last Sunday from the US Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. He wanted to wish Hugh a Happy Birthday. He will be wrapping up his first year there in a couple of weeks. Finals are coming right up and then he will begin summer with six weeks on the US Coast Guard Cutter the Eagle.
William and Annie were visiting Tim, Michele, Ajay and Sidney this past weekend. Tim stopped by on their way back home Sunday so William and Annie could wish Hugh a Happy Birthday, also.
Gilead Historical Society
Norm Buttrick and Cathy McGuire were in town recently at their place on the Bog Road. They had visitors from Belgium and brought them to tour the Schoolhouse and Railroad Station. Sophie Rase-Dehu and her husband, Vincent Dehu, along with their children, Charlotte and Arthur and her brother, Vincent Rase, spent some time with Norm and Cathy. A few years ago, when Norm was teaching, Sophie was one of his archeology students who was here on an exchange program. She went to St. Joseph’s College on a scholarship and later became a lawyer when she returned home to Belgium. She works for the European Community in Luxemburg.
Mary Tyler is working on the 2014 calendar that the GHS is doing to have ready for Friends and Family Day on June 22. We will be having a meeting on May 4 at the Town Hall at 1 p.m. to make final plans for the event which will be a lunch that will be open to the public and a guest speaker.
