If you are looking for a way to help people affected by last week’s bombing in Boston and the plant explosion in West Texas, consider donating blood to the American Red Cross. There will be a blood drive at Telstar High School on Monday, May 6, from 12 to 5 p.m. in the gym. The blood drive is open to all adults. If you are between 16 and 18 years old, you can give blood with written parental consent. For more information contact the National Honor Society, Valerie Forman, or call 1-800-RED CROSS to schedule an appointment. If you don’t have an appointment, just show up. You may wait a few minutes longer, but they will not turn you away. During May, the Red Cross is offering an incentive to blood donors: your choice of a coupon for a quart of Stoneyfield Organic Yogurt or a free pass to a Maine State Park.
On Saturday the first bouquet of dandelions, my favorite spring flower, arrived at my desk at the Norway library. Unfortunately, they weren’t for me. A six-year-old boy had seen the flowers growing near the parking lot on Friday and begged his mother to come back to the library on Saturday. While she looked for books, he picked the flowers, and presented them to her when she checked out her books. “The best flowers I’ve ever received,” she said.
Flowers in Norway seem to blossom one or two days ahead of Bethel. By Sunday afternoon, I found bluets, myrtle, and dandelions blossomed near my house. The trails behind Telstar High School still have patches of snow and ice, but I found budded Mayflowers just inches from the snow along the trail.
If you drive south of town on Route 26, notice the brilliant yellow daffodils that cover the road bank near the Paws’ Inn. Daffodils have bloomed in this spot for at least sixty years. Like lilacs, daffodils seem to endure for decades in this area.
A new business will open soon in Bethel says a sign in the window of the former Hot Taco restaurant on Mechanic Street. The business will have live bait, lobster, game tagging, hunting and fishing licenses and gear, and arts and crafts.
