Newry selectmen establish committee to write bylaws
Newry selectmen Tuesday voted to establish a special committee to craft bylaws to guide the board in their duties.
The panel was proposed by Selectman Brooks Morton, who earlier this spring had advocated for a more comprehensive town charter, which would establish rules for conducting all town business. More recently, he backed off pursuing a petition to create a Charter Commission for that purpose.
As for writing bylaws, Morton said a committee would do a more thorough job than selectmen could themselves. And, he said, since it’s “a matter of self-regulation, a committee would be in order."
He also favored putting the bylaws up for a town vote.
Town Administrator Loretta Powers wondered if enough committee members could be found.
“We’ve had a hard time getting people to be on Planning Board,” she said.
Morton replied, “It’s been quite a few years since we’ve made a concerted effort to get public involvement.”
The board eventually agreed to advertise for committee members and to establish a six-month timeline to complete the work.
