Carol Lynes Brearly
Carol Lynes Brearley, 75, died May 26, 2013 in Lyme, N.H., where she recently relocated to be near family during her illness. Carol was a long-time resident of Bethel, moving there from Atlanta, Ga. in 1993 to follow her dream of opening a B & B. There, she and her ex-husband, Gary Brearley, founded and established the Briar Lea Inn and Restaurant.
Carol was born in Lancaster, Pa., a daughter of Elmer E. Lynes and Eleanor Gable Lynes. She graduated from Manor Joint High School in 1955. She competed and excelled in swimming, and held many amateur state swimming records that remained unbroken for years. She also taught life saving for the Red Cross.
Carol graduated from State Teachers College, Millersville, Pa., in 1961 with a double major in English and Social Studies. In the summers during her college years, she was a counselor at Pine Cliff Camp in Harrison, which is when she cultivated her love for the Pine Tree State. She taught swimming and waterskiing to the campers.
After graduating college, she became a high school English teacher and taught in Westchester, PA., Orange County, Ca., and DeFuniak Springs, Fl. During this time, she had five children and was a devoted, loving mother and eventually an adoring grandmother.
Carol was an enthusiastic antique collector and a passionate poet. She was a member of the Senior College in Maine and was a zealous reader. She especially loved mysteries. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and doing crossword puzzles. She was creative and always added a special touch of beauty in all of her ventures.
She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Michael Lynes and Edward Lynes.
She is survived by daughters Jennifer Brearley, Jessica Havrda, and Justine Perkins; sons Dudley Earl Brearley and Jason Gary Brearley; son-in-law Matthew Havrda; and ex-husband (and dear friend) Gary Brearley; as well as her grand-children, Zachery, Dudley Junior, Willough, Charlie, Madison, McKenzie, Ellie and Casey. She will be dearly missed by all.
A family memorial service will be held in Carol’s honor in the late summer.
