Town Meeting in Andover tonight
A special Town Meeting is planned for Andover tonight (Thursday) for two purposes: to raise $12,000 for an oil spill cleanup at the town garage, and to consider buying a 1995 ladder truck for $100,000 for the Fire Department.
The oil spill happened earlier this summer when the garage’s diesel tank leaked because of corrosion, according to selectboard Chair Susan Merrow.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection cleaned it up, she said.
“There are tests being run to ensure that local water sources were not contaminated,” she said, and so far all tests have been passed.
“The meeting is to see if the town wants to raise $12,000 to replace the tanks. If the town didn’t want tanks at the town garage, we would need to get a contract with a local business that has fuel,” said Merrow.
As for the ladder truck item, Merrow said when discussion of the special meeting began, former AFD Chief Ken Dixon circulated a petition “to allow the voters to have another chance at buying a used ladder truck, which was voted down on the warrant last March.”
If the article is approved tonight, a second article proposed to make the purchase with a four-year bond at an interest rate of 2.05 percent, for a total of $105,177.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall.
