It is really beginning to seem a lot like fall. A lot of the trees have lost their pretty leaves and the birds are coming to the feeder more. I have seen several sparrows, Juncos and a Red-Breasted Nuthatch. Mr. Cardinal appeared one day last week and spent some time on the porch railing picking through the sunflower seeds with our little chipmunk. She did not mind sharing with him, but will chase away some other birds and definitely the other chipmunk that stops by for food.
My brother, Steve McLain, has been busy getting some work done around his house before the really cold weather sets in.
Lise McLain won a handmade scarf and handmade jewelry when she attended the Seniors Plus workshop at Sunday River Summit Hotel on Oct. 4.
Gilead Historical Society
The sign on the corner lot is getting quite a few compliments. It has been on Facebook so those from “away” can see it. The blog is also another way to keep up with what is happening. Check it out at gileadhistoricalsociety.blogspot.com
Lise McLain made a recent donation to the GHS. She found some information about George D. Daniels and sent away for a copy of a confirmation of his appointment and commission as a Trial Justice that was dated July 20, 1949. We plan on framing the paper and hanging it beside the Trial Justice sign that was recently donated to the GHS by the Daniels family.
Lise also donated a copy of the State of Maine, Fifty-Seventh Legislature, 1878. This packet contains the list of the members of the Senate with their district and the House of Representatives members listed by county. The County of Oxford lists Jedediah G. Lary for Gilead, which is a name that appears frequently in Gilead records from the past.
We have also been receiving some very well appreciated monetary donations from several people. Not only those who just stop by to look at the buildings, but from the members of families who used to live in Gilead.
