Triple Crown Alpine Event
Young alpine ski racers in Maine will have a new event to look forward to in 2011. Race organizers have announced the creation of The Maine Alpine Triple Crown, an event that will be hosted on three successive Friday nights by Titcomb Mountain, Farmington, Lost Valley Ski Area, Auburn, and Mt. Abram, Greenwood. The races will be open to all alpine skiers between nine and fourteen years of age.
Historically, alpine ski racing in Maine has been divided between races sanctioned by the United States Ski Association, and non-USSA sanctioned races typically sponsored by middle schools or run as part of the Mt. Dew race series, according to Allan Lobozzo, an official with the Maine Alpine Race Association. There has never been a race series that attracted racers from across the entire spectrum of young alpine skiers in Maine, according to Lobozzo.
"We want to get as many kids involved as possible," said Mark Thibodeau, race director at Mt. Abram. "The goal is to give racers success and to keep them racing and keep them in the sport," he said.
Titcomb will hold a dual Giant Slalom race on Jan. 28, Lost Valley will hold a Slalom on Feb. 4, and Mt. Abram will feature the final event, a Giant Slalom on Feb. 11, 2011.
Each event will cost $15. Age categories in each gender will be 9-10 year olds, 11-12 year olds and 13-14 year olds. Ages will be based on the age of a participant on Jan. 1, 2011. Awards will be given at each individual event. Furthermore, overall awards will be presented in each age group to combined winners, including an award to the Triple Crown champions in each age group. The Triple Crown awards will take place at Mt. Abram on Feb. 11, 2011. Place points in each event will be used to determine overall winners.
Entries should be mailed to the following addresses, with a $15 check. Include the athlete’s name, gender and age on Jan. 1, 2011. Entries should be postmarked no later than the Tuesday before the event. Information, changes and updates will be posted on the website Mainejrski.com.
