Three days for a cure

I know there is some question as to whether Sunday is the beginning of the week or the end, but for us in the Hospitality Business it definitely feels more like the end of the week. With that in mind, I have to say what an amazing experience it was for me and my teammate (Kassia Mirski) a few Sundays ago when we held a fundraiser in the evening to help us raise money for our Susan G. Komen “3-Days for a Cure” team. The amount of people and support we received that evening was more than we could have hoped for, and really shows how caring and generous this little community we live in is.

We held our event at the Funky Red Barn and “thank you” is not enough to cover all that owners Barry and Brooke Hallet did for us that evening. First, we were graciously “thrown” onto the flyers of an event that was already set up, then besides the donations accumulated thanks to the Funky Red Barn (over $800!), Barry and staff had a very long night at the end of a very long weekend. As I have spoke about the event since then, I found out that the Funky Red Barn is host to many fundraisers and community activities (there’s another fundraiser happening in May with local band Monsta). I am not sure what his normal way of handling these fundraisers is, but Barry asked nothing of us in return for his generosity, and that is not something that happens every day.

Kassia and I have committed to raising at least $4,600 for the 60-mile, 3-day walk for a cure for breast cancer. The name of our team is Constance Quest (in honor of Kassia’s mom) and our goal is not only to raise this money, but also awareness in the battle against breast cancer and support to the many in our own little community that are fighting this battle today and have in the past. So, one fundraiser that adds over $800 to our goal and brings out so many people on a Sunday night is fantastic. We have other fundraisers planned for the future and hope to encounter people and businesses that match the standard set by our supporters that night: the Funky Red Barn, Sebago Brewing Company, and Elements Art Studio. We have donation jars around at local businesses (like the Sunday River Brewing Company and Liam’s) and appreciate everyone’s generosity.
