The Power of Place
The Power of Place is a concept that the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce understands well. To quote from a book by that name, "the basic principle that links our places and states (of mind) is simple: a good or bad environment promotes good or bad memories" 1)
Awareness of our environment is very personal. We see, we hear, we smell. thus eyesight, hearing, sense of smell and other things effect our internal sense of being such as contentment and happiness, distress or anxiety.
Pleasant environmental stimuli may include lovely mountain views, sunlight on blue water, quiet woodlands, birdsong or the smell of flowers, all of which are here in the Bethel area in abundance. Unpleasant environmental stimuli could include extreme wind and weather, crowded and noisy living conditions or unpleasant odors, none of which we normally experience here.
"Just as nature affects our behavior, our behavior affects nature." 2) Air pollution is a known and negative problem. We should be able to recognize and try to prevent obvious pollutants from damaging the air we breathe, our health, moods and behavior,.
We live here. But these things also concern our visitors, who choose to bring their business to Bethel and spend time with us, hopefully returning again and again.
Bethel has positive power. It is hard to imagine deciding to damage such an image by approving an asphalt plant within striking distance upwind of the village.
