Andover

Don't forget, tonight, Thursday, Feb. 2, is the meeting of the Save Our School Group in the Town Hall at 7 p.m. The sub-committees will give their reports on staying in SAD 44, joining RSU10, going on our own. They will also help us to understand charter schools.

On Saturday evening, Feb. 11, there will be a fundraiser for the committee ― a play entitled “Love Letters.” There will be an all chocolate, decadent feast at intermission. Tickets are $8 for adults, students and seniors are $5. All proceeds go to the Save Our School project to defray the tax increase due to keeping our school open for this year. Bring your sweetheart and celebrate Valentine's Day.

The Knights of Pythias held an installation on Monday evening preceded by a potluck at the Town Hall.

The Town Budget Committee has finished its work for the 2012 budgetary process. I hope to have figures for you next week. An ordinance will be presented at annual Town Meeting regarding the prevention of the sale and use of fireworks within the community.

Volleyball at the Andover Elementary School has been changed. The group now meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m.

If your interested in dining at our local restaurant, The Little Red Hen, you can find out about the menu and daily specials via e mail at littleredhen04216@yahoo.com.

Churches play a big part in any community and over the years Andover has had a number of churches. Our library, for instance, was once the Universalist Church. This week and next I will profile our two existing churches.

The Calvary Bible Church was founded in October of 1964 and first worshiped at the East Andover School House. When property was donated by David Smith, Sr. on Route 5, the congregation built the present structure. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 25, 1969 when the church was known as the Calvary Congregational Church. The present name was adopted in 2002. Several pastors have led the congregation, including Rev. Nathaniel Pearson, Mr. Lester A. Strout who was ordained at the church on Oct. 5, 1973, Rev. Donald Grover, Rev. Leon Strout, Rev. Duane Waite, Rev. John O'Keefe and the present pastor is Ken Wagstaff. In addition to Sunday services programs include a Ladies Bible Study, Sunday School, Senior and Junior Youth groups and Vacation Bible School. For more information about any of these events at the church you may call Pastor Wagstaff at 392-1121.
