Bethel has some great publicity in the February issue of Down East magazine. The “Inside Maine” section features a two-page spread on 22 Broad Street, the restaurant located in the Gideon Hastings House on Broad Street. Reviewer Virginia M. Wright calls the restaurant “elegant, yet cozy.” Wright says that the Martini Bar is “a great place to relax before or after dinner. And relaxation, along with good food, is what 22 Broad Street is all about.”
Three other Bethel eateries are mentioned in mini-restaurant reviews in the Down East article “A Foodie’s Guide to Snow Country.” Writer Kathleen Fleury reported on “fifteen dishes [that] will send you outdoors with a full belly and a big smile.” Bethel was the only town that had more than one restaurant noted for outstanding dishes. Fleury gave high marks to the lobster fritters at Sunday River Brewing Company; the cham-pong (spicy pork and seafood soup) at Cho Sun, and the chocolate chip cookies at Café DiCocoa.
Down East magazine also has a full-page article on the upcoming annual Fireman’s Race at Sunday River. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the race, the basic premise is that various fire departments, dressed in firefighter’s gear and carrying fifty-foot hoses, race each other down a slalom course to raise money for Maine Handicapped Skiing. Last year, the event raised $330,000 through entry fees, the chili cook-off, and other slopeside events that are open to the public. This year the Fireman’s Race is March 27.
A Valentine’s Day tea will be held on Monday, Feb. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bethel United Methodist Church on Main Street. There will be music and light refreshments. Everyone is welcome.
The recent snowstorms have given us great conditions for outdoor activities, but they have also resulted in a lot of work removing snow and keeping our homes warm. We need to remember our friends and neighbors. Look in on someone who may need a little extra help during the winter months or stop to help someone who needs a hand.
