I hope everyone has a lovely Thanksgiving. Let me know if you want something put into the column next week.
My brother, Steve McLain, was in town Saturday evening to attend the special meeting, since he is one of the Selectmen for Gilead.
Hugh and I went to Gorham, N.H,. last Saturday and spent the day with the grandchildren, William, Annie and Sidney. Around lunch time, we decided to head for Gilead. On the way, we had to stop for some lunch and to check out a couple of craft fairs. There was one at the Legion that Mary Tyler was set up at and another at the Ed Fenn School where Sidney goes to school. I picked up my Grange cookbooks from Mary and the kids had fun getting their faces painted and shopping at some of the tables.
Gerard Dupont had a visit from his daughter, Lise McLain, this past weekend. Lise reports that he is doing well at Ledgeview.
Aline Dupont celebrated her dad's [Gerard Dupont] birthday Nov. 12 at her home with the family. He spent the day with them. Everyone gave him lots of love and gifts. He loved it.
Someone has bought the former Freedom Square Apartment building on Route 2. It appears that there may be tenants there before long.
The Special Town Meeting was held on Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Town Hall. There were 49 registered voters present and a few guests. Alicia McLean was elected moderator. The second article was to see if the town would authorize the selectmen to enter into negotiations with Kenneth Cole and his agent to purchase his land and a building known as Cole’s Custom Auto. After some discussion, a written secret ballot was held and the result was 29 Yes votes, 19 No votes and one abstain. The article passed and the selectmen will begin negotiations. When they have reached an agreement, there will be another Special Town Meeting for the voters to decide whether or not they want to purchase the land and building for that price.
Notice of this Special Town Meeting will be posted at the Town Office, Town Hall, and the Transfer Station.
