Upton

By Laurie Brown

Dan Glaud and Ross Dominique spent an enjoyable weekend at the Upton House with their gracious hosts, Bob Pepler and Charlotte Dominique.

Wendy Hanscom moderated at the special Town Meeting consisting of nine articles and the school budget. There were 31 voters, almost double the attendance at the regular Town Meeting. Voters agreed to fund the Upton Scholarship Account with a cap at $15,000. In a 19-11 vote, voters approved the allocation of town funds for high school students attending state-approved private schools, and defeated an article to repair the town’s plow truck. Voters authorized the selectmen to spend up to $20,000 to purchase a heavier piece of equipment to plow the roads. Prior to the vote, informative, constructive discussion ensued offering selectmen several ideas on the type of equipment that would be most beneficial to our needs. Voters authorized to sell the 1998 Ford truck and other town property and/or equipment that have no value to the town. Voters agreed to modify the procedure to select seven trustees for the Judkins Recreation Center. Voters approved the school budget of $72,305.

At the square dance we attended in Wilton Sunday afternoon I found myself dancing between my partner and my corner, both of whom were named Bob Brown.

Like most of Maine, Upton was pretty soggy all weekend, but the sun is peaking out today, Monday.

Hopefully, we’ll all have a drier week to enjoy. Selah
